2012 Office Depot Foundation National Backpack Program
Since 2001, the Office Depot Foundation National Backpack Program has helped children boost their self-esteem and build their self-confidence by giving them essential tools to succeed in school. In 2012, the Foundation is celebrating the 12th anniversary of this award-winning program by donating 400,000 sturdy, kid-friendly sackpacks to deserving kids across the United States and globally. By the end of this year, Office Depot and the Office Depot Foundation will have donated more than 2.9 million backpacks and sackpacks – which have been characterized as "a symbol of hope" – to children.
We would like to suggest several story ideas related to this milestone:
- The tremendously important role that a new sackpack can play in enhancing a child's ability to succeed during the school year.
- The difference that a new sackpack can make in the way children feel about themselves and their experience in school.
- The commitment that the Office Depot Foundation has made to supporting this program – and, in fact, expanding it – despite the challenging economy.
- The sheer magnitude of 400,000 sackpacks. For example, if you put them all together they would weigh as much as 100 Liberty Bells!
We invite you to review the materials in this Internet Press Kit and use them with our compliments. We can help to arrange interviews with students, parents, schools and non-profit organizations that have received donations in the past; as well as with Mary Wong, president of the Office Depot Foundation.
